2011 Movie Reviews

Linked listings have in depth reviews; unlinked titles have rankings only. All rankings are out of a potential five stars.

NOTE: I was sadly remiss in 2011 as concerns updates to Lady Liberty's Constitution Clearing House and, although I made time to actually see a number of movies, was unable to write reviews for most.

My favorite film of 2011: Captain America: The First Avenger

My pick for an Oscar™(based only on those films I've actually seen): Hugo.

5 stars rating

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
A fitting and satisfying end to one of the best book and movie franchises out there.

4 stars rating

  • V for Vendetta (DVD review) More relevant now than ever...
  • Fast Five
Easily the best since the first — and I loved the first.
  • Thor
Wasn't planning on liking Thor, but things don't always work out as planned!
  • Bridesmaids
I've heard this called The Hangover, only with women. Not quite, but almost as funny!
  • X-Men: First Class
Now I understand so much more — and like it even better!
  • Super 8
    What a treat!
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
I really wanted to love this movie. And I really did!
  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Now this is how it ought to be done!
  • The Help
Not my kind of movie, but wonderfully rendered.
  • Moneyball
I hate baseball. I loved Moneyball.
  • 50/50
How can a tragedy be so funny? And how can a comedy be so unbearably moving?
  • The Ides of March
The only thing that would have made this movie better is if it didn't bear such an appalling resemblence to reality.
  • Hugo
Unutterably beautiful onscreen, the story itself almost lives up to its looks.

3 stars rating

  • The Black Swan (2010 release)
  • I Am Number Four
I liked this better than the critics did, but I suspect the book is the better bet.
  • Battle: Los Angeles
Another film the critics hated, but I found its realism both refreshing and terrifying.
  • The Lincoln Lawyer
If you liked the book, you'll like the movie. If you haven't read the book, the movie's still well worth a look.
  • Paul
Yes, okay, I'm sorry. But I thought it was hilarious.
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon
All right, now we're back to what a Transformers movie ought to be!
  • Horrible Bosses
The biggest surprise in this film (besides Jennifer Aniston)? It's better than you expect it to be!
  • Crazy, Stupid Love
Funny and moving, sometimes at the same time.
  • The Change Up
Ridiculous premise, and still I laughed...
  • Contagion
Billed as a thriller, this is more a horror story — one that could all too easily become reality.
  • Real Steel
I wasn't sure what to expect, but I ended up being entirely entertained.
  • The Rum Diary
Far from my usual fare, the acting and the overall execution makes The Rum Diary a worthwhile choice.
  • The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part I
Yes, I'm a "Twihard." So sue me.
  • Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Critics suggest this proves Tom Cruise remains a force with which to be reckoned. This time, the critics are right.
  • Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Not as good as the first, but still diverting.
  • We Bought a Zoo
With boatloads of potential to be mediocre at best, this one exceeds expectation in all the right ways.

2 stars rating

  • No Strings Attached
  • Season of the Witch
  • Just Go With It
Unfortunately, just about what you'd expect from an Adam Sandler movie...
  • The Adjustment Bureau
Great idea, not so great execution.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Another disappointing sequel to what I consider one of the best films I've ever seen.
  • The Hangover Part II
The first? Just about the funniest film I've ever seen. The second? Meh.
  • Green Lantern
Love Ryan Reynolds, love action movies. Green Lantern? Not so much.
  • Cowboys & Aliens
Good idea, great effects, wonderful cast combine for disappointing results.
  • Our Idiot Brother
Could have been funnier. Could have been a lot funnier!
  • In Time
Yet another great premise that fell short in its execution.
  • Tower Heist
Had its moments. Unfortunately, you've already seen most of them in the trailers.
  • Immortals
    Disappointing, although pretty to watch.

  • Bad Teacher
What a waste of my time and ticket money...

2010 Movie Reviews

My top (REVISED) pick for 2010: The King's Speech

5 stars rating

4 stars rating

  • The Fighter
  • True Grit
  • The Social Network
  • The Town
  • Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Brilliantly creative concept, brilliantly executed
  • Inception Great idea with stellar editing that makes it work, and work well
  • Predators Easily the best since the original
  • The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Either you're a fan, or you're not. I'm a fan.
  • Kick Ass Much to my pleasant surprise, it did
  • Shutter Island Very nicely handled and very creepy mystery

3 stars rating

  • Black Swan
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (3D) Simplistic? In many ways. But beautifully rendered on all levels.
  • Faster
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I
  • RED
  • Secretariat
  • Easy A
  • Going the Distance
  • The Expendables Nostalgia and entertainment combined
  • Salt Clever, but a little confusing and surprisingly predictable though entertaining none-the-less
  • Knight and Day Formulaic, but still offers some diversion
  • The A Team Speaking as a huge fan from way back, this was cool
  • Robin Hood Too much of a departure from the legends for me, but the onscreen authenticity of the time was breathtaking
  • Iron Man 2 Good movie with the great Robert Downey, Jr., but no real comparison to the first
  • Date Night A rare comedy (rare these days, at any rate) that was actually pretty funny

2 stars rating

  • The Tourist Well-acted, beautifully filmed, and with a clever twist, none of which makes up for a script that's lacking.
  • Love and Other Drugs
  • Due Date
  • Hereafter
  • You Again
  • Nanny McPhee Returns (3.5 stars if you're under 7)
  • The Switch Not truly terrible, but utterly predictable
  • The Other Guys Stunning in its mediocrity, except for Will Farrell who's not even that
  • Dinner for Schmucks The dinner makes the movie. Too bad it's only a small part of the film!
  • Grown Ups Sometimes stupid can be really funny, but sometimes stupid is just stupid
  • Shrek Forever After (3D) None of the sequels has lived up to the original, and 3D imagery didn't help this one to do any better

1 star rating

  • Vampires Suck No, this movie does
  • Valentine's Day How can a movie with so many good actors be so unremittingly bad?

Politically objectionable rating

NOTE: A movie with a "red star" rating signifies a film that, for one reason or another, I find politically too objectionable to recommend.
