In the News Now

May 3, 2007 UPDATE

  • For your informationGOP 2008 Candidates Prepare to Face Off in First Debate (Cybercast News Service 05-03-07) Lady Liberty says: What she finds most disturbing about this story is the attention given to the leading candidates despite the fact that all have their problems and shortcomings. There are other declared candidates who have things of their own to offer, and even in a story from a news outlet that complained about debates that don't include all of the candidates, those same candidates are shunned. How are any voters supposed to learn more about all of the potential candidates if they're never publicly informed in the mass media?
  • Bad newsBoth sides unhappy with border-fence plans (The Kansas City Star 05-03-07) Lady Liberty says: Anybody who favors the sovereignty and security of the country shouldn't have a problem with the idea of a fence. As far as property theft and environmental issues go, well, she'd recommend the fence be high tech rather than high walled. We seem to have plenty of cameras available to watch us on our own crowded streets; we ought to be able to figure out how to watch some wide open spaces. In fact, she'd be happy to ship some of those urban cameras south if need be...
  • Good newsReversal: Virginia Beach to question illegals Police chief calls Fox's O'Reilly 'pathetic,' but says cops will ask aliens' status (WorldNetDaily.com 05-03-07) Lady Liberty says: As far as she's concerned, there's virtually no excuse why criminals shouldn't be asked to prove citizenship along with everything else the police ask them to provide. Deportation is the least of the punishments that should then be imposed on those who are guilty. She acknowledges, however, that deportations won't do much good if we don't get our borders secured. Are you listening, President Bush?
  • Good newsAll 10 Are In: Fox News Says No Candidate Will Be Left Out of GOP Debate (Cybercast News Service 05-02-07) Lady Liberty says: She's delighted to hear that neither Fox nor the South Carolina GOP are deliberately excluding some legitimate candidates from early debates. When it comes to something as important as a presidential election, she doesn't believe the public can be too informed!
  • Good newsBill Putting Brakes On Trans-Texas Corridor Project Sent To Governor (KWTX-TV Waco, TX 05-02-07) Lady Liberty says: She's pleased to see that the legislature so overwhelmingly decided we might want to actually think about building this highway before we do it. Now if we can just convince the federal government it might want to reconsider the sanctity of our borders as well...
  • Good newsVehicle barriers are erected along Mexican border to stop illegal entries (KTRK-TV Houston, TX 05-02-07) Lady Liberty says: Well, that's a start, anyway...

May 2, 2007 UPDATE

  • Bad newsSmall turnout, big questions Rallies draw a fraction of last year's crowd as activists ponder the movement's future. (The Los Angeles Times 05-02-07) Lady Liberty says: She doesn't care how few or how many turned out to glorify criminal acts. The bottom line is that illegal immigration represents a terrible threat to all of us and it has got to be stopped. (She'd also point out that many of the problems — those killed making border crossing attempts, families separated by deportations, those who live in fear of immigration authorities — wouldn't exist if these people didn't commit their crimes in the first place.)
  • Bad newsBush, Cheney Committed Impeachable Offenses, Say Liberal Authors (Cybercast News Service 05-02-07) Lady Liberty says: That may or may not be true (she tends to lean toward the former). As near as she can tell, however, the root cause of much of the alleged abuse is less the quest for power or (if you're altruistic) the desire to protect the country. It is rather the fact that we in the general public — despite the fact that we know better — are inclined to let politicians get away with just about anything if we like the sound of the explanation.
  • Bad newsSeven Out of 10 GOP 2008 Hopefuls Could Be Excluded from TV Debate (Cybercast News Service 05-02-07) Lady Liberty says: She remains opposed to the artificial narrowing of the candidate field, and agrees with critics who suggest it's far too early to muzzle anybody's campaign in the interest of letting more "serious" candidates speak. And as far as determining who's "serious" and who isn't, a better barometer would involve the establishment of the proper campaign mechanisms as opposed to X% of support or the like!
  • Bad newsCOMMENTARY A peculiar day for immigration rallies (CNN 05-02-07) Lady Liberty says: The irony is almost painful. She suspects that you'll agree. By the way, if Dobbs marches next year, she'll be marching, too. Join us?
  • Good newsAround globe, walls spring up to divide neighbors (Reuters 05-01-07) Lady Liberty says: Sorry, she's still with the contingent that says that fences make good neighbors. And frankly, they're even better when the neighbors happen to be bad.
  • Bad newsCOMMENTARY Illegal Immigration: Balkanization of America (Freedom's Phoenix 05-01-07) Lady Liberty says: She wishes that she didn't know it, but she desperately fears the writer is all too right.

May 1, 2007 UPDATE

  • Bad newsU.S. Flags Wave at Immigration Rallies (AP via My Way News 05-01-07) Lady Liberty says: Basically, these people want all of the rights of citizenship from voting to welfare as their reward for breaking the law. She'll agree to that the day she's allowed to similarly steal from others and keep the goods and the money she manages to take. She admits that the authorities got us into this mess by lax (at best) border control, but that doesn't mean we should forget border control all together!
  • Bad newsProtesters demanding 'rights' for illegal aliens 'We are indigenous! The ONLY owners of this continent' (WorldNetDaily.com 05-01-07) Lady Liberty says: She agrees with the immigration reform folks who say this kind of demonstration is only helpful in pointing out the radical side of illegal immigration and the very real threat it represents. That being said, it's still a lesson that makes her sick. That so many liberals buy into the sob stories only makes it more nauseating — not to mention threatening.
  • Bad newsNow U.S. trucks to cruise Mexico 'Demonstration project' to include American vehicles south of border (WorldNetDaily.com 05-01-07) Lady Liberty says: She's not going to comment on the irony of this story appearing on May 1. What she will say is that she doesn't care what descriptive terms are used or that the border crossings go both ways during the term of the "demonstration." She remains opposed to a program that will almost certainly prove economically damaging, a threat to law and order, an infringement of sovereignty, and a clear and present terror danger.
  • Bad newsAs Deportation Pace Rises, Illegal Immigrants Dig In (The New York Times 05-01-07) Lady Liberty says: She's apparently supposed to be all broken up that two people who knowingly broke the law, haven't bothered to assimilate, and had an anchor baby they seem to think means they ought to be able to stay in the country, are having legal problems. She does agree that deporting Mom alone was cruel. The whole family should go.
  • Bad newsCOMMENTARY The dark side of diversity (WorldNetDaily.com 05-01-07) Lady Liberty says: Dark? Extremist? Yes to both. There's also a valid point.

April 30, 2007 UPDATE

  • For your informationLet's See That Immigration Reform Bill, Senate Republicans Say (Cybercast News Service 04-30-07) Lady Liberty says: She doesn't know that seeing the bill in advance will make much of a difference. There are some who, despite the very real threat to our sovereignty and security, are adamant that our borders be effectively opened and that amnesty be offered. More discussion is sadly unlikely to matter to them.
  • Good newsMay Day organizers clash before march 'There is division within the movement, but we don't like to make that public' (WorldNetDaily.com 04-29-07) Lady Liberty says: She can't get too upset over the splintering of the cause, but she'd still like to know how it is that a group of criminals can publicly march down the street promoting the commission of their crime and not endure repercussions. As far as she's concerned, those marchers that do show up should be marched directly onto a bus and returned to Mexico.
  • Bad newsAnother border agent charged with murder Was shot self-defense against rock attack? (WorldNetDaily.com 04-29-07) Lady Liberty says: Apparently our Border Patrol agents are not only prevented at every turn from protecting the border but are prohibited from defending themselves against invaders as well. What's wrong with this picture is what's wrong with this country...
  • Bad newsDUI illegal kills pedestrian week after given probation Hit-and-run follows suspension of sentence for conviction in 2006 drunk-driving arrest (WorldNetDaily.com 04-28-07) Lady Liberty says: She holds those who failed to deport the man equally responsible for the death of an American citizen. Shame on each and every official whose disinterest in protecting our borders has resulted in such ongoing problems!

April 27, 2007 UPDATE

  • Bad newsIllegal Immigration-Related Cases Clog Courts (NewsMax.com 04-27-07) Lady Liberty says: And that doesn't include the cases that "just" involve illegal entry into the country! It's abundantly clear that our borders have simply got to be far more secure than they are. She's aghast that there are apparently those in Congress who are too naive to know it, and worse, that so many who do know apparently don't care. History is going to show that this great country was brought down from within...
  • Bad newsUltra-violent gang found in 42 states Central American members move to Los Angeles, then branch out (WorldNetDaily.com 04-27-07) Lady Liberty says: The spread of violent foreign-based criminal gangs in this country only bring home the simple fact that we've got to secure our borders or succumb to invasion (not to mention the fact that, if gang members can get in and wreak havoc, so can terrorists).
  • Bad newsFeds threaten Texas over superhighway funds plan Transportation Department opposes bills delaying NAFTA project (WorldNetDaily.com 04-27-07) Lady Liberty says: The people of Texas are rightfully concerned about the security of their state — and the rest of the country — should this highway be built. She's appalled that the federal government seems to be cavalierly ignoring such justified concerns and, in fact, steamrollering over objections. She thought it was the federal government that was supposed to protect our borders, not help undermine them!
  • Bad newsFox News to Help Pick Debate Candidates (Forbes.com 04-26-07) Lady Liberty says: She categorically disagrees. This is (or at least it's supposed to be) a critically important decision for voters to make. Deliberately keeping some candidates out of the mix because too few have heard of them or currently support them does nothing but ensure that those people remain largely unknown. And given the mediocrity of some leaders and the quality of some who are trailing, that's a shame not only for some voters but for the entire country as well.
  • Bad newsChild's civil rights were violated during immigration raid, lawsuit says (San Francisco Chronicle 04-26-07) Lady Liberty says: The fact is that children are hurt anytime their parents turn out to be criminals. If we start calling that a violation of civil rights, then what parent could ever be accused, tried, convicted, or jailed, hmm?
  • Bad newsHouse: Illegal immigrant children should be eligible for KidCare (Bradenton Herald 04-25-07) Lady Liberty says: No, they shouldn't be. It's bad enough that the government steals money from Americans to give to other Americans, but it's reprehensible to suggest stealing money from Americans to reward criminal behavior by others. As far as she's concerned, that's criminal in and of itself!

April 26, 2007 UPDATE

  • Good newsBad newsBush: 'Immigration laws should be followed' Spokeswoman says no room for rebel 'sanctuary' cities (WorldNetDaily.com 04-26-07) Lady Liberty says: Yes, that's lovely that the President seems to oppose the notion of sanctuary cities. She does, too. The problem is that she wants to solve the problem by keeping illegals out while the President apparently wants to turn the whole damned country into a sanctuary!
  • Bad newsTancredo: Newsom a “Rogue Mayor” (Austin American-Statesman 04-25-07) Lady Liberty says: She agrees. She also wonders right along with Rep. Tancredo just what the DOJ is going to do about it. You'll forgive her if she's not holding her breath for any kind of constitutional resolution — you know, the one that would actually bother protecting our borders from invaders...
  • Bad newsCOMMENTARY Government control proves Disastrous (Freedom's Phoenix 04-25-07) Lady Liberty says: That's why the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution to limit government control. Maybe we should consider actually paying attention to it one of these days, eh?
  • Bad newsBad newsMexico's health czar seeks better care for Mexicans in California 'We can build a new model' for insurance (San Francisco Chronicle 04-24-07) Lady Liberty says: She's not interested. If Mexico wants better health care for its citizens, it should look to its own system and stop interfering with ours. Meanwhile, if we want better and less expensive care for Americans and legitimate visitors, we should eliminate free care for illegals by eliminating the illegals themselves (in other words, send them home and keep them out, not anything more nefarious than that — no hate mail needed, thanks!)
  • Good news'Impeachment rallies' scheduled across US for Saturday (The Raw Story via Freedom's Phoenix 04-23-07) Lady Liberty says: It won't have an effect, of course, but she can't argue that there are some good points being made...

April 25, 2007 UPDATE

  • Bad newsArizona Senator Seeks Immigration Deal (AP via My Way News 04-25-07) Lady Liberty says: Senator Kyl's change of heart on the issue isn't really a change of heart. It's doubtless a combination of things, not the least of which is political wheeling and dealing. She realizes, of course, that politics is the art of compromise. But some things cannot be compromised without compromising the country itself. The immigration issue is one of them.
  • Good newsTeamsters sue to halt Mexican truckers 'This reckless program must be stopped and the public protected' (WorldNetDaily.com 04-25-07) Lady Liberty says: She stands with the Teamsters on this one. This program, even in its pilot stages, is a danger on the highways. But far worse than that, it represents real inroads (pardon the pun) into the ongoing threat to our national sovereignty and security from the south, and she's not buying it.

April 24, 2007 UPDATE

  • Bad newsPaper-trail voting gets organized opposition Groups argue bill may cause problems for '08 elections (USA Today 04-24-07) Lady Liberty says: Uhm, guys? This shouldn't be that hard. And given how important it is, she's not sure she cares if it is.
  • Good newsAnti-Illegal Immigration Activists Swarm Capitol (Cybercast News Service 04-24-07) Lady Liberty says: She certainly appreciates the efforts of those in Washington who are actually attempting to do something about the very real threat to our national security and sovereignty emanating from our borders. Now if only those who were actually supposed to be keeping an eye on that sort of thing would do something material about it!
  • Bad newsBush passes on chance to meet talk-show hosts Radio leaders joining protest of president's immigration policies (WorldNetDaily.com 04-24-07) Lady Liberty says: There's no question in her mind that the White House is on the defensive on this one. Why the President continues to hold onto such an obviously unpopular (not to mention entirely unconstitutional and dangerous) policy is beyond her. It's almost enough to make her believe in those "one world" conspiracy theories!
  • Good news'Don't ask, don't tell' immigration era ending An ASU student may face deportation after a traffic stop, a sign of a new policy (The Arizona Republic 04-24-07) Lady Liberty says: Yes, the kid is in an unfortunate situation. But here's the thing: He shouldn't have been in the country in the first place. We shouldn't have paid for his schooling, and he shouldn't have been (if he was) accepted for in-state admission at ASU. There'd be far fewer of these sad stories if we didn't pretend not to notice illegals once they're here. Better still, maybe we shouldn't let them in in the first place! It's a thought...
  • For your informationBorder Patrol agent charged with murder Evidence shows illegal immigrant posed no threat, Arizona prosecutor says (AP via MSNBC 04-23-07) Lady Liberty says: If the witnesses are telling the truth (which she frankly wouldn't believe for a minute except for the fact that prosecutors claim the evidence matches their stories), then the agent should be prosecuted. She only hopes that any legitimate prosecutions aren't damaged by the patently malicious prosecution of other agents in recent months.
  • Bad newsBad newsMore Than 1 in 4 Diebold Systems Found to Have Recorded Votes Incorrectly in Cuyahoga County, According to 2006 Election Audit (The Brad Blog via Freedom's Phoenix 04-21-07) Lady Liberty says: We can't trust the machinery. We can't trust the officials. We can't trust the politicians. And yet we're supposed to feel confident in our elections? You'll forgive her if she's not signing on...

April 23, 2007 UDPATE

  • Bad newsSoldier Protesting U.N. Mission Rejected (AP via My Way News 04-23-07) Lady Liberty says: Without a reason behind its decision, she can't condemn the judgement out of hand. But she's profoundly disturbed that the only man with the courage to stand up and uphold his oath to place the Constitution of the United States paramount is being punished, and that that singularly cruel punishment is being allowed to stand. Absent any evidence to the contrary (and she's looked), she considers Michael New to be an unbridled patriot.
  • Good news'No Amnesty' Is Cry at D.C. Immigration Protest (The Washington Post 04-23-07) Lady Liberty says: When a rally like this one only manages to bring a few hundred people to the National Mall and those demanding criminals be given amnesty attract hundreds of thousands, she's inclined to think it might already be too late to save this country from its own excesses. That being said, she also can't and won't condone an unconditional surrender. How about you?
  • Good newsNAFTA Superhighway hits bump in road Given severe blow as Texas Legislature voting to block program (WorldNetDaily.com 04-23-07) Lady Liberty says: It's about time somebody somewhere showed some loyalty to the Constitution on this issue! It's obvious that Washington isn't much inclined to do so...
  • Good newsBad newsUnited on immigration, Democrats divide voters (The Washington Times 04-23-07) Lady Liberty says: When even many liberals oppose any kind of amnesty or open border programs, you know there's a real problem! And the fact of the matter is that unfettered or illegal immigration is the single thing most likely to take this country down in the shortest amount of time. She thinks the Democrat candidates' carelessness in that regard is a warning flag indeed!
  • Good newsBad newsAgents: No confidence in border chief (The Washington Times 04-23-07) Lady Liberty says: She doesn't blame the agents for a minute. She's also not entirely sure she blames the chief. He's doubtless following the direction given by his bosses (in whom she, for the record, has no confidence herself).
  • Bad newsSmugglers increasingly are crossing southern U.S. border (MCT via Ledger-Enquirer 04-22-07) Lady Liberty says: Seriously, isn't it about time we did something about border security? It's not just gardners and cooks and pregnant women sneaking across, you know...
  • Bad newsBad newsNewsom pledges to make SF a sanctuary for illegal immigrants (San Francisco Chronicle 04-22-07) Lady Liberty says: San Francisco's mayor has flagrantly announced that he intends to ignore the Constitution and to aid and abet the commission of crimes against it. That that announcement is not only not met with talk of impeachment but by actual praise in some corners is a real indicator as to just how low this country has sunk.
  • Good newsNew Tape Raises Questions About What Senator Clinton Knew of Campaign Violation (Cybercast News Service 04-20-07) Lady Liberty says: She doesn't know if these allegations are true or not. But if they are true, she sincerely hopes that another Clinton doesn't get away with breaking the law!

April 20, 2007 UPDATE

  • Bad newsBad newsFed wiring Social Security payments to illegals? Officials say no, but new task force probing 'growing' benefit fraud (WorldNetDaily.com 04-20-07) Lady Liberty says: She doesn't believe for a minute that administration officials can dismiss out of hand the idea that a number of these payments are going to illegal recipients. She fears, however, that this is another one of those things that the federal government will decide isn't really illegal by passing new laws to make it so. With all of the troubles we're having with entitlement programs, you'd think the feds would be a little more careful, wouldn't you?
  • Bad newsJudge suspended for jailing immigrants without bail (AP via Lexington Herald-Leader 04-19-07) Lady Liberty says: She'd like to point out that it's fairly typical to hold people without bail if they're flight risks. And given the fact that illegals very rarely return to court as scheduled, she's quite comfortable saying that they're flight risks. Further, whatever the illegal was picked up for is immaterial where holding them is concerned once it's known they're also illegal aliens. Sorry, but she's entirely on the judge's side here. The judge should have been congratulated, not censured.

April 19, 2007 UPDATE

April 18, 2007 UPDATE

  • Bad newsDocs Point to E-Voting Bug in Contested Race (Wired 04-17-07) Lady Liberty says: As if the integrity of electronic voting systems isn't sufficiently doubtful, she'd point out the key phrase in the opening paragraph of this article is "known flaw." Without legitimate votes — or at least the faith they're legitimate — we'll undermine the very fabric of our system of government. (Not that things are so great, mind you, but a flawed system will only magnify other faults.)

April 17, 2007 UPDATE

  • Bad newsBad newsMexican trucks to enter U.S. in 15 seconds Test program would minimize inspections of loads (WorldNetDaily.com 04-17-07) Lady Liberty says: The very nature of this program is frightening enough, but the more she knows, the less she realizes officialdom knows or is prepared to know. This sounds to her less like any kind of trade agreement (if that's what it is, it's a bad one) than it does a method to facilitate entry by bad people. She opposes the program in the strongest possible terms.
