Third Amendment

Soldier

No soldier shall, in time of peace, be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

The Third Amendment
was written to counter an oft-used British technique designed both to save the Crown's money as well as to demoralize its subjects. By quartering soldiers in private homes, there was no cost to the military for room and board. At the same time, the government had its representatives firmly entrenched within the day to day lives of the people themselves, making it difficult if not impossible for citizens to organize any kind of rebellion.

To date,
there has never been a court challenge or ruling involving the Third Amendment.
