May
3, 2007 UPDATE
-
Utah
only state to allow guns at college Some students legally pack
concealed weapons, others question value (AP via MSNBC
05-03-07) Lady Liberty says: She's
willing to bet that there won't be a Virginia Tech-style massacre
at a Utah school any time soon! Good for the authorities in Utah.
Better still for students there!

Gun
Control Bill Seeks to Close 'Terror Gap' (Cybercast
News Service 05-02-07) Lady Liberty says:
She can't imagine anybody who would care to facilitate the arming
of terrorists. That being said, she opposes this particular measure.
She agrees wholeheartedly with critics who consider such authority
to be a clear and present danger to several of our civil liberties,
and she further has very real concerns about the mistakes that will
inevitably be made (look no further than the "no fly"
lists if you want to see how mistakes aren't addressed
by government authorities in connection with the War on Terror!).
Good idea; bad, bad bill.

 More
Calls for Gun Control in Aftermath of Virginia Tech Shootings
(Cybercast News Service 05-02-07) Lady Liberty
says: Once again, the Brady Campaign is virtually bathing
itself in blood as it demands still more gun laws — none of
which, by the way, would have prevented the Virginia Tech massacre.
For the sake of all of the innocents who will die in the future
if the Brady Bunch get their way, she can only hope that cooler
— and truly safety-conscious - heads prevail.
-
Perry:
Banning pistols isn't the answer Governor says licensees should
be free to take them anywhere for protection (Houston
Chronicle 05-01-07) Lady Liberty says:
Governor Perry is right. Chances he'll be able to act on the fact
are only about 50/50, though, given the tenor of some of the comments
following the article.
-
-
Concealed
Weapons Permits (KOBI-TV
Medford, OR 05-01-07) Lady Liberty says:
It's too bad the public safety budget has been cut, but she's going
to give credit to the local sheriff for being not only honest but
pragmatic.

-
 Virginia
Gov. Kaine Closes Gun Purchase Loophole (NewsMax.com
04-30-07) Lady Liberty says: This is
better than it could be — it specifies that only those deemed
both dangerous and ordered to receive involuntary treatment are
subject to added reporting. That being said, is it possible that
mistakes will be made? Is it likely that judges will err on the
side of caution? Is it probable that there will be abusive accusations
made and actions taken? She doesn't think she has to answer those
questions for you...
-
Gun
Charges Dropped Against Senate Aide (AP via My
Way News 04-27-07) Lady Liberty says:
Oh, come on. Either he had a license or he didn't. In DC, that can't
be all that hard to check. She considers this to be a prime example
of the difference between those who are apparently exempt from the
law and all the rest of us "little people."
-
 Poll:
Lax gun laws not the real problem behind Virginia Tech rampage
(bizjournal via MSN.money
04-25-07) Lady Liberty says: It's hopeful
that nearly half of those polled recognize that gun laws weren't
the issue in Virginia. But there's bad news, too. First, nowhere
near enough people realize that the best way to defend ourselves
against such incidents in the future is for more of the good guys
to be armed. And second, far too many people are in favor
of restricting — or even banning — civilian ownership
of firearms.
-
Lawmaker
Wants 'Bill of Rights' for Pennsylvania Gun Owners (Cybercast
News Service 04-25-07) Lady Liberty says:
She thinks we've already got a Bill of Rights and that we ought
to pay more attention to that one. What part of "shall
not be infringed" is so complicated, anyway? That being said,
she's entirely behind the prohibition of comprehensive gun owner
databases. She's also all too well aware that all the laws in the
world won't protect you from a determined assailant while a firearm
most assuredly will.
-
Va.
governor looks to close loophole in gun sales law (AP via The
Boston Globe 04-25-07) Lady Liberty says:
Once again, she won't argue against guns being kept out of the hands
of the mentally disturbed. She can't help but wonder, though, how
such databases will be handled including diagnoses, misdiagnoses,
mistakes and more. She's also concerned (past history shows her
she'd better be!) that more and more "conditions" will
eventually be added to prohibit gun ownership.
-
-
Packing
heat in plain view (Lancaster
New Era 04-24-07) Lady Liberty says:
She actually knows a couple of people who do this kind of thing
as much for the educational value of the general public as for self
defense. Whichever reason is paramount in the minds of those who
exercise their civil liberties, she's in support of them doing so
and can only hope that more real Americans will follow suit.
-
Legal
loophole gives mentally ill access to guns (CNN
04-24-07) Lady Liberty says: She continues
to be perfectly willing to stipulate that the mentally ill shouldn't
be wandering around with a loaded firearm. That being said, she
has serious fears that any new law will be (pardon the pun) overkill,
and serious doubts that any new law however invasive will offer
any guarantees of safety. And don't get her started on the definitions
of mental illness or the determination of same!
-
'Shooting
Back' suddenly is hot topic Author says mass killings happen
where guns aren't allowed (WorldNetDaily.com
04-24-07) Lady Liberty says: She'd
like to make it clear that she's not endorsing the book advertised
here. At the same time, some of the points outlined within the column
discussing the book are valid and and worth repeating here.
-
-
Democrats'
Bill Addresses Background Checks for Gun Buyers (Cybercast
News Service 04-23-07) Lady Liberty says:
The single biggest problem with this legislation is voiced by the
proponents themselves: "A criminal background check is only
as good as the records that the states provide to the system..."
The fact that it bloats an already substantial federal database
with still more information about us is almost secondary.
-
-
Rules
should have barred weapon purchase (AP via The
Desert Sun 04-20-07) Lady Liberty says:
She can't and won't argue the idea that someone adjudged to be "an
imminent threat" shouldn't have a firearm. She's concerned
instead with related grounds. Who would be charged to make such
a judgment? What grounds are sufficient for such a judgment? What
about second opinions? Would such a ban on firearms ownership be
permanent? Would such a judgment retroactively apply to existing
guns in the hands of a particular person, and would confiscation
thus also be mandated? She's also all too well aware that sudden
psychotic "snaps" are called sudden and snaps because
they are. And no matter what "loopholes" do or do not
exist in the law, we can't protect ourselves against those people
unless, well, we can protect ourselves against all comers...
-
25
years murder-free in 'Gun Town USA' Crime rate plummeted after
law required firearms for residents (WorldNetDaily.com
04-20-07) Lady Liberty says: The evidence
abounds that the hoplophobes are completely wrong about guns and
gun ownership. Unfortunately, the facts have never swayed that particular
group...

 COMMENTARY
Let's
lay down our right to bear arms (CNN
04-20-07) Lady Liberty says: There's
not a thing she can say to somebody who's arguing from such a position
of both utter ignorance and an almost total bent toward tyranny.
The only thing she can do is point people less wrongly convinced
that they're right to columns that actually contain little things
she likes to call "facts." This man is already long lost
to freedom, but the far more unfortunate repercussions involve the
naive who are inclined to believe his nonsese. Take a look at the
comments on this column and weep...
-
COMMENTARY
Gun-free
zones are recipe for disaster (CNN
04-20-07) Lady Liberty says: Not only
has Ted Nugent got it all exactly right, but he has a particularly
entertaining way of saying it. Do you suppose Mr. Nugent might be
interested in running for political office any time soon?
-
Anti-Gun
Mayors Push for Gun Trace Information (Cybercast
News Service 04-19-07) Lady Liberty says:
It's her understanding that legitimate (key word: legitimate) criminal
investigations can, indeed, make use of gun trace data. It's fishing
expeditions that are prohibited, as well they should be. She agrees
with those who woul make the broad access ban permanent.
-
Mayors
urge Bush to tighten gun control laws (The
Boston Globe 04-19-07) Lady Liberty says:
There's not a single gun control law of which she's aware —
enacted or proposed — that will stop the bad guys from being
bad guys. The one thing that we do have in our control is ensuring
that we have the ability to fight back. Unfortunately, that's pretty
much the only thing that gun control laws address, and they don't
do so in a positive manner, either.
-
Campus
killer's purchases apparently within gun laws (CNN
04-19-07) Lady Liberty says: That doubtless
means there will be those demanding more stringent background checks.
The bottom line is that this kid's history was clean as far as anything
prohibiting him from owning a firearm is concerned, and no number
of new laws would have changed that. Frankly, if there were something
in his history to prohibit him from buying a gun, he would have
obtained one illegally anyway.

COMMENTARY
Time
for calm (Fairbanks
Daily News-Miner 04-19-07) Lady Liberty
says: She agrees. Knee-jerk reactions are almost always inappropriate,
but in this case, such reactions could have far broader repercussions.
-
House
shoots down workplace gun proposal (Miami
Herald 04-18-07) Lady Liberty says:
Business owners ought to be able to ban whatever they like on their
own property. Of course, she thinks that banning self defense means
they're legally obligated to protect their workers — and that
any failure means they should lose every nickel they've got. But
that's just her...
-
Pol:
Shooting won't change gun laws (AM
New York 04-17-07) Lady Liberty says:
She hopes that the shootings in Virgina do, in fact, change the
gun laws. It's her opinion that the laws need to be modified immediately
so as to facilitate our ability to defend ourselves!
-
As
most of you can imagine, the anti-gun forces are already demanding
more gun control laws in the wake of the recent campus shootings.
The vast majority of these anti-gun activists, of course, have no
clue what it is they're talking about. They make their every decision
and choice based solely on an utterly unreasoning fear of firearms.
One of the most shrill gun grabbers on Capitol Hill is Rep. Carolyn
McCarthy (D-NY). Lady Liberty received a link to this YouTube
clip that shows just how utterly ignorant McCarthy is. Keep
in mind that she'll be one of those promoting legislation that will
modify the "privileges" you'll be "permitted"
to have, and make sure you take action accordingly when the time
comes.
-
Second
Amendment Groups Bracing for Gun Control Moves (Cybercast
News Service 04-18-07) Lady Liberty says:
Yes, there's likely to be some signifiant effort here to tighten
gun control measures. But if you review the curbs already being
proposed in the wake of Monday's shootings, you'll notice something
very interesting: Not a one of them, separately or together, would
have done a thing to prevent the tragedy. Nothing could make it
clearer than that that gun control isn't about the bad guys. It's
about disarming the good guys — which, lamentably, is just
what helped to ratchet the death toll in Virginia so high.

-
U.S.
Gun Laws Draw Heat After Massacre (AP via Breitbart.com
04-17-07) Lady Liberty says: Once again,
more attention is paid to the gun than to the man who wielded it.
And no attention at all is offered to the disarmed teachers and
students who died, helpless to defend themselves, thanks to laws
they obeyed but which bad guys ignore as they do pretty much any
other. (She'll excuse foreign journalists who all too often know
next to nothing about real liberty. She's considerably less charitable
toward Americans who would see us all disarmed.)
-
Tech
rampage brings back memories of ASL shooting (TriCities.com
04-17-07) Lady Liberty says: If there's
one thing that makes her sicker than the shootings on Monday, it's
the reaction to the school shootings years before at Appalachian
Law School. Three people died, but others were likely saved when
a couple of students got their own firearms and subdued the shooter.
Despite the obvious benefits of an effective self defense, the school
now bans all firearms on campus. Gosh, maybe it should have made
murder illegal there, too, just so such things wouldn't happen <cough>.
-
Gun
Control Is Tough Sell in Congress (AP via My
Way News 04-17-07) Lady Liberty says:
That's better news than it could be, but that doesn't mean for a
minute that there aren't those in Congress who will try to make
the sale, no matter how tough it is. She's appalled by the ghouls
who celebrate the blood of innocents (that ironically wouldn't have
been shed at all had somebody else had a chance to fight back!),
but even more so by the threat of the loss of the most basic right
of all: the right to self defense.
-
COMMENTARY
Why
You Should Own a Gun (Cybercast
News Service 04-17-07) Lady Liberty says:
There's a rock solid argument here. She doesn't, of course, expect
the facts to sway the rabid gun grabbers, but no amount of rhetoric
will change the fact they're the facts, either.
-
COMMENTARY
Needed:
More Americans with guns (WorldNetDaily.com
04-17-07) Lady Liberty says: She couldn't
agree more. Well, except for one thing. The author calls a lack
of effective response a "feminine" one. She's plenty feminine,
and frankly would have been happy to shoot to kill herself. Femininity
only sometimes equates with illogical...
-
 State
quashed bill allowing handguns on campuses College spokesman
celebrated 2006 defeat because it would help make campus safe (WorldNetDaily.com
04-16-07) Lady Liberty says: Once again,
we have definitive proof that anti-gun laws do little if anything
to stop the bad guys, but are all too successful in preventing the
good guys from having any capability of defending themselves. The
shooter in this case had nothing but a couple of handguns. While
he stood there and reloaded, any trained CCW holder could have taken
him down. The only reason that none did is because they'd already
been unarmed by another set of thugs calling themselves politicians.
WorldNetDaily is running a cartoon
that's considerably less than funny, but which illustrates the situation
all too well.
